Old Sacramento

The Old Sacramento Historic Park, or Old Sac as it is most commonly referred to, consists of several city blocks of buildings across Interstate 5 from Downtown Sacramento. The area is formally a National Historic Landmark District.
Old Sac is one of the biggest tourist attractions in the Sacramento region, with roughly five million visitors annually. What Old sac visitors see today is the result of an extensive restoration project that began in 1960 and continues today.
Most of the buildings, and all of the plank sidewalks are raised to account for the flooding problems that were persistent throughout the Sacramento downtown area until the levies that exist today were built to keep the water out.
Old Sac houses a wide variety of restaurants, from casual and takeout food to restaurants that offer fine dining. The Rio Cafe and Joe's Crab Shack offer dining overlooking the Sacramento River, and for those who want to eat while floating on the river, there is the Delta King, a converted paddle wheel river boat. If you want some political spice, dinner at the famous Firehouse Restaurant will have you sitting in room where some of the state's most powerful people have negotiated mega-deals while enjoying the house specialty prime rib.
One of the biggest draws in Old Sac is the Railroad Museum, which features several full size train engines - both diesel and steam. The most visited of which, made famous by the Tom Hanks movie of the same name, is the Polar Express.
